Captured Tracks 廠牌專頁 History / About (via Captured Tracks) Captured Tracks was started in earnest in 2008 by founder Mike Sniper in the basement of Academy Records in Brooklyn. Prior to the label, Mike released music under the Blank Dogs moniker and, for it’s first 5 releases, co-ran a powerpop/punk/glam reissue label called Radio Heartbeat. He was also a buyer/manager of Academy Records at the time and has previously worked as a record store employee at Princeton Record Exchange in NJ and the now (sadly) defunct Midnight Records in Manhattan (formerly a garage/punk label as well). While the first C/T release is technically the Blank Dogs “Captured Tracks Volume One” CDR from 2008, CT-001 is the Dum Dum Girls S/T 12″ EP from 2009. For the first two years of it’s existence, the label was mostly known for one-off 12″ EP’s and 7″s from bands that Sniper had known from touring with Blank Dogs: Woods, Fresh & Onlys, The Oh Sees and Grass Widow to name a few. The first proper LP released was CT-10, The Beets debut “Spit in the Face of People Who Don’t Want to Be Cool.” After the success of that release and the Oh Sees “Dog Poison,” the label began to sign new artists to LP deals and began to concentrate on new talent. 2010 was the breakout year for the label, with the debut LPs of Beach Fossils, Wild Nothing and The Soft Moon becoming verifiable “indie hits” despite the fact that the label’s distribution and financial capacity were extremely limited. At this point, all the label’s layout and and art were done by bands themselves and Sniper. All the music was home-recorded, mixed and produced by the bands due to financial restrictions, a trait that soon fell to the wayside as the label sought to expand both in sound and influence. With the signing of Craft Spells, Blouse, Soft Metals, DIIV, Widowspeak, MINKS, Dignan Porch and Heavenly Beat in 2010-11, the label gained a roster of homegrown talent consisting entirely of bands with whom the label had secured prior to any release beyond a lone 7″. With the exception of Thieves Like Us (as of now, the last signing contrary), the label has since stopped signing acts who have prior significant releases. As a result, the label is able to focus on only developing new talent and is able to expand its series of reissues, which include The Wake, The Cleaners From Venus, Medicine, The Monochrome Set and “The Shoegaze Archives”. 2012 marked the first year the label’s roster submitted 2nd LP’s (Dignan Porch, The Soft Moon and Wild Nothing) as well as the expansion of the label’s staff and ability to fund studio recordings. The roster also grew to include Holograms, Naomi Punk, Mac DeMarco and Chris Cohen, all of whom released debut LP’s that year. The label decidedly released fewer records in 2012 in order to concentrate on full lengths from the roster, as opposed to the furious speed of releases prior (an astounding 143 from 2009-2011). As a result, the presence of the label’s artists continued to grow significantly throughout the year to make it the most successful year to date for C/T. The first imprint of the label, Body Double Ltd., a reissue only label, also began that year. In 2013, the label announced a partnership with the esteemed Flying Nun label to release and distribute it’s impressive and influential back-catalog, starting with the Toy Love 2xLP set.
