Musicology is the 28th studio album by American musician and songwriter Prince.
Released in 2004 through NPG Records and Columbia Records. Initially distributed to concertgoers during his Musicology Tour (March–September 2004), the album was later released digitally and physically in Europe and the U.S. The album was Prince s most successful in years, reaching #3 on the Billboard 200 and achieving Top 10 status in ten other countries.
Critically well received, Musicology won two Grammy Awards: Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for the title track and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for Call My Name. The album was certified double platinum by January 2005. Its success was partly due to an innovative sales strategy, as copies were included with concert tickets, leading Billboard and Nielsen SoundScan to change their chart rules.
Prince s Musicology Tour grossed $87.4 million and was attended by 1.47 million fans, featuring both new tracks and classic hits like Purple Rain and Kiss. In 2019, a purple vinyl edition of the album was released.
