When partners Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada first started operating under the Moon Duo name, they did so with a sense of spiritual exploration; for cosmic pastures, for transcendental experiences and for truth in elemental rock n roll. Having completed a couple of home recorded EPs, their 2011 debut Mazes comes fully formed as a pitch-perfect slice of garage psychedelia, far more primal and grizzly than its studio setting would suggest. The likes of Seer and Fallout are pure, Velvet Underground-style droners, all fuzz and riffs, while the likes of the title track summon a remarkably immediate 1960s pop rock sensibility.
